Չնայած Ռուսաստանում օրենքով արգելվում են միասեռ ամուսնությունները, այնուամենայնիվ, Իրինա Շումիլովան և Ալյոնա Ֆուրսովան նոյեմբերի 7-ին կարողացել են գրանցել իրենց օրինական ամուսնությունը։

Իրինա Շումիլովան ապրում է որպես ոչ ավանդական սեռական կողմնորոշում ունեցող կին, սակայն նա իրականում տրանսսեքսուալ է և անձնագրով տղամարդ։
Հարցազրույցի ժամանակ Իրինան նշել է, որ չնայած ֆիզիոլոգիապես նա տղամարդ է ծնվել, հոգեբանորեն նա կին է, և չնայած իր անձնագրում նա որպես տղամարդ է նշված, սակայն իրեն ամբողջությամբ կին է համարում։
Զույգն ամուսնացել է Սանկտ Պետերբուրգում՝ շրջապատված իրենց ընկերներով ու ընտանիքի անդամներով։
